We came over to the UK to escape the heat of Spain, only to find similar temperatures here in the South of England.

I switched on the air-con but no cold air :(

I can't hear the compressor clutch engaging, so I suppose I'll have to investigate that first.
With my 1993 SL500, it has the climate control panel without the LCD screen, so I can't run the diagnostic programme using REST.

No proper tools or my workshop here, anyone got any pointers to the problem?

James.

James, friend.....
We can not have you overheated. Lol.

On the accumulator are two switches, one red or green for the fans.

The other controls the compressor.
Bridge that.

The compressor should engage.
If it does, you are refrigerant low.

Add some, now you should be HAPPY.

Regards,
aam.

Absolutely spot on Albert

I shorted out the the two cables going to the green accumulator switch, and the two axillary fans started up, and the A/C clutch engaged.

It was of course still blowing warm air, so I'll have to look around for a workshop that can re-gas the system and check for leaks.

That's what friends are for. :)

Don't look for troubles.
Timing is everything.....

Just stick a few cans in her, preferable one with lube the other dry. ;)

That should do her for now. Lol.

aam

I looked in 'Yellow Pages' and incredibly there is an A/C specialist about half a mile away.
I called them and have made an appointment for 12 today. They quoted £66 (about $100) to check and re-gas the system.
At least being able to tell the mechanic about the accumulator switch test, and where to check and fill the system, will give me a lot of credibility ;) So thanks again to Albert and mm.

I'll post up later what happens

All done  The workshop, Cartech Autocentres Ltd. Worthing West Sussex, were really quick and effcient. They put the car onto a Konfort 650 for an hour and a half to check the vacuum. They then added a UV dye and re-gassed the system with 900grams of refrigerant.

We are now driving around with the top down, but icy air blowing into our faces

No way Jose, the amount of times we've been flashed by speed cameras, I don't want the perpetrator sitting in the car posing for BenzWorld :D
