Yesterday another 126 (debadged) swooped in for fly-by; made eye contact; and then gave me the nod. The nod is given to any 126 owner whose car doesn't present as a POS. If it's being driven as a beater then eye contact is made, but no nod.

My question: what other cars out there elicit the same response between two drivers who've never met before? I'd like to hear findings based on experience, not hypothesis.

Thanks

Jeep wranglers owners give the wave or peace sign depending on where you are. Real porsche owners give the wave. By real porsche owners, I mean the kind that do their own wrenching and know something about their cars. Not the ones who wear their cars like a fashion accesory. W126 owners only sometimes wave.

I run into that w/ the Healey...actually, a lot of people in a lot of different cars all give me that recognition.

I havn't gotten that in my 560SEL yet and I see a 126 every few days.

I always got it from other 126 diesels when I had my 300SD, though.

I really noticed nods from owners of the older Audi range like the 4000's, 5000's, GT, 80, 90, 100, 200 and V8 when I was really into older Audi's.

I know this isn't a car, but Harley riders always signal to one another when riding, my grandfather as a handful and everytime i've been with him i noticed that bikers always wave.

I've noticed the same thing about bikers. They seems to always greet each other.

It use to be a different story back then. Before biker would help each other on the road ( fixing). When I see a W126 or W163 stranded on the road I usually go and check it out if I'm not too busy. I think Benz world should sell a decal for our window and show whos really a ethusiam. <- No spell check

An associate of mine just prurchased a Mini. He says they have a sign. I believe it is, arm vertical, hand inline with the arm, then quickly release muscles holding the wrist letting it go limp.

A nod is as good...

...as a wink to a blind horse (Rod Stewart).

I don't tool around much in the 126 's (560 is wife's driver, 280 is son's) but have had an occasion or two and it seems to be nods for the 126 bunch.

In the 107 (my weekender) though, there appears to be no uniform "secret handshake" - sometimes a wave, the occasional "beep, beep" but ALWAYS a BIG SMILE...

The Harley wave is very well established, always with the left had, of course. You almost take offence if the other Harley riders does not return your wave.

Actually, most motorcycle riders wave to each other. The exeception are the road racer riders, but they are already hanging on their wrists and are too tired to sit up and wave.

I have yet to see any sign of reckognition from another w126 driver, though most of the other w126 that I see are simply old cars to their drivers.

I spent a few years on the back of Harleys and when a biker passes another they will wave the left (clutch) hand. If it is a Japanese bike it is typically more of a "Hi", just above the handle, but if it is a Harley, then is a slilght drop of the left hand and a short chop wave.

Miata enthusiasts (non stock owners) always seems to wave, there are several forms; Over the windshield if the top is down (the only way to drive one), A flash of the pop-up lights in bad weather.

Bicyclists also tend to greet each other with a smile and a wave. The tradition is flailing a bit and remains much stronger among the tourists (crunchy, granola) than the racers.

Comradeship's great ain't it? I think we all should buy an island and form our own country..who wants to be president?
I think we should buy that 560 limo that has been circulating on eBay and CraigsList in Southern California forever and just perpetually drive that thing around like it was the Yellow Submarine, BattleStar Gallactica or Enterprise...the gawdawful thing is about big enough for all of us.

Greeting other Mercedes Drivers on the road

Let you all in on the GERMAN way of greeting one another in a Mercedes ( and yes, they ALL call them That, not MERC or BENZ, just to clear that up). how do i know you say?..Dad drove a Mercedes all his life..worked in Sindelfingen, so have i.. OK..enough said. there is two ways to greet .. close friend = Light horn ( same as trying to move a slow ass driver out of the passing lane on interstate) other Mercedes drivers you meet on the road?. you extend your LEFT index finger on the 12 o'clock position on the steeringwheel .. like a " hi, ah, i see you"..not the middle finger, the INDEX..on the left hand!....there ..one free lesson of the secret code of ..oh hell ..secret is out now..LOL..you all have fun driving your great cars....Tommy...

Corvette & Caddilac owners also have this sort of pack animal instinct.

I have noticed that 86-Current Mustang, Camaro, Trans-Am, Audi, Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi and other Sport's models are too busy driving like an ass to notice what the other guy is driving.

That’s not to say that when I am driving one of the above vehicles (Except for Audi, Honda, Mitsubishi and Toyota as I would rather walk) I feel like being an ass. This is only because one has the raw horsepower on tap to become that bloody drunk with power. Its rather fun...

Now when I am on the E-way doing 85 MPH turning some miles with the family I go hunting for Corvettes, Camaros, Trans-ams and other such 1/4 horses as they never learn that there safe haven is stop light to stop light. I always find some jackass doing 85 in the Mustang on the highway with there 4:10 gear and I love walking them like a dog when they hit there 120 MPH red line.

I must admit that come the end of July I am going to need a little extra kick in the pants as one of my customers is calling my 560 out! What makes it worse is that the customer’s car is a highly modified nitrous breather built by my own hand!! This is a no win situation as I will loose either way.
