Remote won't work - won't light up when button is pressed. I opened remote and batteries spilled out. I bought new batteries but I don't know the proper positioning of them. No info in owner's manual. All I see is a + on the inside of cap that came off.

Any one know proper position of batteries?

Don't know about battery, but nice cross section of vehicles. I wish my wife would let me have more toys/ and or top down driving in any vehicle we already own! ;)

Those are his wife's cars, not his.
(He was in trouble because he played with the remote of her SL500 and the batteries popped out:D)

I'm going to guess here. There are 2 batteries required. The battery case is negative, and the smaller stud is the positive electrode. I think that you place the first battery in the space with the negative side down. Then place battery 2 on top with the negative side down. Then re-fit the cover.

This way the positive of the top battery is facing the cover - as indicated. Now try the operation with the red light.

After this you have to 'synchronize' the transmitter in the remote key with the reciever in the car. Do you know how to do this?

Both you and RKH are correct about battery position. I finally saw page 139 of the owner's manual where it shows placement and resyncing.

I put in the batteries and no red light. Not working after battery replacement and following resync instructions. Must be another problem. Other remote works just fine.

For a '99, the remote should operate on both IR and RF

Sorry, but I don't understand what you are getting at. Please elaborate.

Thanks in advance.

IR = Infra Red which is short range and require straight line of sight to operate, so the remote need to be aiming at the IR receiver. Can be affected by bright sun light.

RF = Radio Frequency is longer range, can operate through walls (you can lock/unlock the car from the kitchen).

So if your remote was working before the battery change, just try it on the car again (double check battery polarity).

Batteries are new as of today. Problem remote will not light up when buttons are pressed like my working one. Have tried 5 resincs. Any other thoughts or tests?

If other remote works, then the car's receiving end is good, what is left is this remote could be bad.
Just for the hack of it, switch the batteries with the working remote (as 'new' battery could be defective).
