Hey guys i piced up a 98 SL500. was going to chage the oil but dont have the owners manual. So i got a question.

On a 98 SL500. Do i run mobil one Synt. like i have to in the G500, or did they still use regular oil in 98 on those cars. I mean i dont care to run synt, but if the car had regular oil i dont want to develop oil leaks.

The sticker on the upper radiator of my 1999 SL500 says to use MOBILE 1 synthetic oil. MB spec sheet 229.3 approved oils and 229.5 approved oils;"MB Longlife Service Oils" both list "Mobile 1 SuperSyn European Car Formula 0W-40"oil along with other oils.Your MB dealer may have more info.Enjoy your new ride.

Yes, 1998 and newer use synthetic oil. I have a 1997 and asked the Mercedes Dealership and they informed me 97 was the last year that used regular oil.

Uh oh. I had Mobil 1 put in my 97 SL500 about one month ago.

Do I need to get it drained and replace it with regular oil?

thanks guys.

Dallas, it all depens on the car. i would just keep my eye on the oil. Some cars get a leaks after the swap. On my old 95 grand i swithced to syn, at 100K miles. no problems, however a lady at work had a 97 ML and when mb went to syn the dealer chanded her oil and put it in. she developed major oil leaks and mb had to replaced all the seals under warranty.

So just keep an eye on it.

Thanks guys,
