wheel to the newer Steering wheel in the 00/01 e320
that allows stereo/ cellular control?

2000+ steering wheel will not work for 1998 E-Class. This is because since 1999 CAN-Bus network is standard in E-class and the steering wheel buttons will only work with CAN-Bus. You could probably install it in your car but without the functions
