So I was driving home from work the other day, somewhat spiritedly. When I arrived, I parked for a bit but left the car running. I returned about 5 minutes later to a car that wouldn't move forward or backward. Turns out, ALL of my transmission fluid poured out of the bottom of the transmission.

It looks as though it's coming from between where the engine meets the transmission, but I'm not able to tell for sure. Are there any common problems with these cars in this area? I need to get this fixed asap, and am willing to do any work myself.

Damn that sucks. From my very limited knowledge it seems like you need new transmissions seals to prevent any further leaks. But I could be underestimating the situation. Ask MarcusF, Keyhole, and MGD, to name a few, as they seem to know a lot more than I do about these cars.

Actually, to be precise, I think it blows. ;)

On a more serious note, I would crawl under and check it out. If you are lucky, it may just be the connector/adapter/ spacer/pilot bushing on the right front of the transmission. This is a well-known source of leaks and it is also easy to replace.

If that is not it, the transmission must be removed from the car, and then the front disassembled and the seals replaced. Although the parts are cheap, there is no aspect of this that is easy, unfortunately.

Good luck.

I took a look under the car today, it turns out the leak is coming from the access hole for the torque converter, spilling right onto the exhaust.

I'll be taking the transmission out some time this week hopefully, but I don't quite know what I'm getting myself into.
