I just bought a 95 C36 AMG, and on the drive home (about 80 miles) everything was fine.

However as I pulled into my driveway, at idle, I heard a rattling noise (sounds like loose marbles) coming from the front of the engine bay on the drivers side. The noise does not depend on the A/C being on (100 degree day today) or whether the car is in Park, or in gear. There is no visible water or any other fluid leaks.

Very clean car, the only sad part was that it was driven about 7K miles over the last 4 years.

Any thoughts on where to start debugging this problem?

Thank you. I am thinking in addition to the diesel sound, the car may also need a new belt tensioner as well.

I need a mechanic's stethoscope to be sure.

It may just be an old serpentine belt. When was your belt replaced last, over time they do stretch a bit.

At first the diesel sound bothered me... honestly over time through I've grown to like it, now I prefer it, she sounds mean even at idle :) . Ironically enough the bottom end is basically a diesel engine anyways so its only appropriate that it sounds like one ;)
