My friend Pat Hamilton called from the middle of Wisconsin this morning. He's dragging home his 1992 300SE with a tranny problem. She laid down about 240 miles from home. It's never convenient is it?

He described her demise as a sledge hammer hitting the bottom of the tranny at highway speed. It makes a horrible racket. Put it in reverse and it feels like it goes into gear but no motion or noise. Put it in a forward gear and it sounds like metal bits rattling about and no motion. Even in park it makes a bunch of noise.

The car has 210,000 miles but is otherwise in good shape. He wants to get it back on the road. Is this the same transmission as is used in other models? 500? Is it possible that the torque converter desintigrated? Due to age, it may be that salvage parts are in order.

Pat asked me to post this since he is away from a computer for a while.

Well she's back up and running! A new trans and life is good. Dropped the old one out yesterday and placed the new. After a very good flushing of the lines and cooler, new flex discs, and fresh fluid "maddie" is back on the road. Btw for anyone who cares, the 92 and 93 300se use the same trans. Mine is a rebuild out of a 93 and they are numbers matching. Just a tid-bit of info for all you guys out there.

yeah the 722.502 was used on 92-93 M104 engines, it was also used on SL320, it is debatable that 722.508 and 722.506 from older 300SL and newer SL320 can be used as well... different gearing ratios, but everything else is the same...

I got the trans from a very good freind of mine in wi. Hes a lead tech at a dealership in milwaukee. The just so happened to have a 93 300se that came in with a bad motor and he bought the car for next to nothing. The gentleman bought a new car from the dealership and traded the the 93 in. They had done three times the value of the car in repairs over the ownership of the car. Including a mercedes rebuilt trans. I stole the trans for 400.00! I just made a 700 mile trip and she drives great..
