Car has 154K, and this has occurred once already warmed up on 3 separate occasions. All three were flooring it from a dead stop. If the car is already going (even only 5mph), it doesn't seem to do it. The grinding lasts about 1 second and the car continues on its way. It's not like it happens before the car starts moving, but happens as it's moving. It almost feels as though it's happening at the middle or back of the car.

I wish I could verbalize the noise.. then I could search for something other than "Grinding" which doesn't appear to yield any similar problems.

Transmission fluid is fine, oil was changed less than 1K ago. New continental tires (almost impossible for force wheelspin in dry conditions, and I know the noise wasn't from chirping, etc).

Try doing a search on flex disk. Sounds like that might be the problem.

Almost halfway between a grind and a groan/moan.. it definitely sounds rotational (IE, if i let up on the gas, the frequency slows). I'll search for the flex disk now

Just called the mechanic who had the car up on a lift to check the suspension and change the 02 sensor in late january. He indicated he checked the flex disks and saw no sign of trouble (Cracking, etc). I found another post from a guy with the exact same symptoms, but it doesn't look like he ever replied to let everyone know the ultimate solution. I've already PM'd him.
