Hello all - W124 are largely uncharted territory for me, having spent most my energies on W126 and W123.

This 88 300TE I've started with...since these came as TDs, and that engine is also found in the W126, might an OM617A (like in a 300SD e.g.) be an option to swap in, correct transmission and all? I ask since I have a few here in the shed. I'd want front springs from a TD etc, and run the SLS another way unless I can find a W123 TD head/engine.

I also have a spare M117 from a 560SEL. That can run the SLS easily....

Thanks all in advance for any advice given.

OM617 would be harder as there will be no engine mount arms for it since it was never installed in the w124. The OM602, Om603, and OM606 however were all installed in the w124 at some point during its lifetime and I think, physically at least, would be a bolt in endeavour.

Good points Dude....in other news, the 300SE-SD conversion worked out well...using the 2:47 diff too.... is also twin-tank WVO....
Not a big fan of the M103 either, me...

you'd want to find one of the not-very-common 124 diesels, and swap everything over from that. pretty sure diesel needs different fuel pumps, has different final drive ratio, etc. the best were the 95 E300 Diesels, with the M606

IF the OP is intent on running waste veg oil, I'd stay away from any W124 diesel. And the '95 twin cam is probably the worst candidate of the bunch

The older OM617 is far more robust to deal with waste oil.

The kid that does some side work for me converted a 1992 300TE by putting in a motor from a 1987 300TD (OM603) with a 722.6 5 speed electronic transmission. It was quite the effort that's best done by using a parts car.
Don't bother with an OM617, those engines are ancient. If you can find an OM603 with a newer head or OM606 turbo, it would make a nice car. His car is quick. With the 5 speed, it spends a lot more time in its peak torque range.
