Been 4-5 years since last startup. I did fix fuel pump leak with new copper washers. I primed the car a few times with key on, engine off. For the first few times it turned over normally, but didn't start. Now it sounds like only starter is turning over. At the start and ten seconds in you can hear it.

Yup...sounds like the solenoid is sticking...probably from lack of use.

How's the battery?

Battery two weeks old. Which solenoid? Went to show the wife why I wasn't working on the car. Yuo you guessed it, it started right up. Beautiful idle and started going forwards and backwards in the garage. Need to get the transmission fluid moving again too.

Ha Ha, My 88 560SL is doing that as well. The over running clutch in your starter is over running in both directions. You need one of these.

So I need to take the starter out and break it apart?

Fairly simple job?
Some people have trouble removing the starter. The bolts are hard to get to. They require a long extension ~24", with a flex socket. Lowering the back of the transmission helps. You may need to apply so much torque that the extension winds up 1/2 a turn before the bolts break loose. I am always scared I'm going to break my flex socket doing the job. Disconnect the battery and remove the wires on the starter first. As far as replacing the over running clutch its just like a Ford if your familiar with those.

In my books it rates as hard but so do a lot of things mechanical.

I could not find a video for the r107 but here is a Pagoda video and a more recent Mercedes. It will give you the idea. I am pretty sure that I have seen pictures on this site with very long extension bars for the task.

I searched (Bosch SR461x SR59x - Google Search) and it pointed back to this site... ;)

This is the best info that I could find:

I replaced my starter about 2 months ago and used the SR59X (for an '87 560 SL). I went to Rock Auto and I recognized Bosch over the other names but that was the extent of my research.

Or would just lifting the passenger side be better?
If it was me...I would try to achieve maximum height giving you maximum room.

I did most of my maintenance...including starter re&re with the car on 4 jack stands. Less bending over in the engine compartment and enough room to maneuver below decks.
