Can some body tell me what the copper colored item is
with the rod sticking out of it going to the lower part of the exhaust. What is its function?

I know this posting is a year old but could someone also help me on this? On my car this rod doesn't move. What ever the thing is on the turbo is stuck.

It's the wastegate... Carbon can lock those things up bad... REAL bad... But never fear, if your turbo is working, you'll notice less turbo lag with that thing stuck shut...

That pic was taken when I was in the process of changing the exhaust gasket and removing the EGR
and capping it.
That rod is very very hard to move, movement is done by the exhaust pressure, I don't think I'd worry about it.

I tried to move it gently with a pry bar and it is definitely stuck solid. Since it does not appear to affect performance, I'm leaving it alone. I also discovered a vacuum leak (a disconnected hose at the vacuum pump) which I have fixed. There's much more performance now so now I'm back in business.
