I bought a 1987 260e from a local mechanic and when I got the car it didn't run for the past 4 years. I changed the battery and the fuel pump relay along with the OVP relay. Put in fresh gas and it started right up. It ran normal for about 4 minutes and then the idle dropped to barely 500 rpm and the car began to slightly vibrate. Also I have thin white smoke coming out of the tailpipe and when I step on the gas I have blackish smoke shoot out. The car only has 120,000 miles on it. The mechanic said the white smoke is probably from the gas tank being almost empty for so long that there was condensation in the tank. He askehd if it smelled sweet and it doesn't. But I am getting a very faint burning oil smell. Also 02 sensor light is on. What's my next step? Also changed the Fuel filter with MANN filter and changed oil/filter and a water pump Also if it's burning oil can I put in thicker oil to slow that process?

sounds like the first thing you should do is a thorough cleaning and inspection of the engine, and a compression test. flush and replace coolant, oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, rear axle.

my 1990 260E that had been parked 10-15 years suffered from dried out injector seals and fouled injectors. it needed a new EHA. new distributor cap and rotor and spark plug wires and plugs. now its running great and everything works, and it drives tight like a new car.
