The ongoing saga of my Son's 1993 190e.... We found a decent parts car in a 1986 190e with a good 2.3 in it to swap into the 1993. The question is will this be a fairly straight forward swap or is there enough difference that I should wait to find a newer engine to put in his car? I do understand the injection system is somewhat different, but I was planning on transplanting the one from the 93 onto the engine of the 86, if it is just a matter of bolting it on.

I guess (but can only guess) that the swap will be about as simple as any swap can be. Just don't chuck the donor car until everything is working.

If you come up against problems I guess they will be niggly things such as different electrical plugs and perhaps more (or even less) vacuum lines than expected.

I havn't torn into the engine on the 93' yet, however there is a suspicious looking cracked and lifted piece of the valve cover over cylinder #3 . So, I'm leaning toward possible broken timing chain with a lifter that may have been pushed into the valve cover. We might tear the engine down just to see what the real problem is/was.

From the carnage I've seen on M102 engines the camshaft usually breaks nearer to the cog - but hey - it will be interesting to hear about what you find

So I finally got around to pulling the valve cover off of the head to discover the bolts on the last valve rocker assembly were all loose and one bolt had pushed itself into the valve cover. So now the question is, what kind of damage would that have caused to the engine, if I decided to try and salvage it instead of doing the swap? I also noticed some differences in the distributor assembly, the valve cover where the egr hose connects, and the fact the newer engine has a double width timing chain.

Well I guess you need to remove the head and see which bits are bent and which bits are dented.

If you are unsure about the damage post up some pictures and I'm sure you'll spark a debate!
