As the title suggests, what was swapped out (i.e. cams), changed or whatever when a ECE 2.3-16v was imported into the good old U.S.of A? My example has a cat and O2 sensor added. Thxs w201034

The gray market imports are a real mixed bag, it was up to whomever did the conversion.

My 85 16v has a cat but no 02 sensor, still has the ECE ignition/FI module. The original owner thoughtfully reinstalled the original headlights (French) and light wipers too.

Basically higher compression ratio , taller final drive, and better acceleration.
Cams are identical.

If the car has catalytic converter, the power is less than ECE rated output

Compression ratio -10.5 (ECE version); US from 1985: 9.7

Rated output - 185 hp / 136 kW at 6200 rpm (ECE version) US from 1985 177 hp / 130 kW (with catalytic 170 hp / 125 kW) at 5800 rpm

Rated torque - 235 Nm at 4500 rpm (ECE version); US from 1985: 230 Nm (with catalyst 220 Nm) at 4750 rpm

Final drive ratio - 3.07 (ECE version); US from 1985: 3.27

Ignition - transistor ignition (ECE version), US from 85: electronic ign. system

Acceleration 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) - 7.5 s (ECE version); US from 85: 8.2 s (with catalytic 8.5 s)

I believe ECE versions also came standard with monotube front struts and slightly lower ride height.

Thanks for the insight, however what I'm asking is:

"What if anything was changed to federalize a ECE spec to US standards?"

For example when the euro spec BMW M3 (1994 - e36 s50b30) came to Canada the rear lights where swapped out by the dealers before delivery.

What I've read on other forums is that the ECE w201034 2.3-16v where fitted with cats and 02 sensors maybe even the "r16" resistor. Some forums go on to say the cams where swapped to futher help emissions. Who knows? Like the first posters reply "imports are a real mixed bag".

The speedo; the headlights (which meant they plugged the vacuum line to the adjustable feature); the tail lights; the emission systems were inconsistent since most of the "port of entry" states didn't have strict emission testing and it depended on where the car was being registered, so some have added catalytic convertor and 02 sensor circuit.

The good news . . . no changes to the bumpers were required; no one added the extra steel bar in the doors that the US ones had; engine tuning was untouched.

I bought my 190E 16v in '89. There was a host of things that had to be changed over. I think I might even still have the paper work.

Head lights to DOT
Tail lights to DOT (need reflectors and side markers
Turn signals (need parking lights and reflectors)
buzzers for seat belts
third tail light
door reinforcements
My car came with O2 and Cat as OEM

Those are the only things I can remember right now. I a sure there was more. IIRC the cost was about $5k-$6k. Bloody rip off but the car was still cheaper than buying it here in the US.
