85 300CDT Diesel smell in trunk

Hello all,

I recently bought an '85 300CDT that seems to be in reasonable working order, with exception to one fact: the trunk smells like diesel fuel. When I bought the car (2 weeks ago) there wasn't a trace of the smell, but I've since filled the tank up twice and am thinking there may be a leak at the top of the the fuel tank spout. Is there something really dangerous going on here? Or is it just an annoyance that one can live with? Should I just fill the tank up 3/4 full? If something needs to be replaced because I'm in immenent danger, are we talking about a major expense? Any suggestions are appreciated. THANKS!

Fortunately diesel fuel is not as dangerous as gasoline. Diesel will burn but you need more than a spark to set it off. I'm not sure how dangerous it could be otherwise other than the fumes may give you a bad headache. It's possible that the hose that the filler neck connects with the tank may have a leak but check in and around the filler door area. There is a small drain line that drains any overfilled fuel. It could be that this is plugged and could be draining back into your trunk.
