Dear Forum,
I have a 1983 300 SD. It has trouble starting to move from a stop. The engine revs up and the car kind of slightly lunges forward. Eventually it will catch and move forward after 3 or 4 pushes on the eccelerator. This is especially common when the car is heading up an incline from a stop. Such as a stop sign heading up a hill. Sometimes in this situation, I have to rev the engine wildly to get it creaping forward. After it starts rolling, it catches and starts moving fine.

Does this sound like an automatic transmission or torque converter issue?

The lower part of my engine is pretty greasy from an exhaust leak that I recently fixed. Not sure if that black grease has contaminated anything. I am planning on getting it steam cleaned soon.

Any ideas what my problem is?

Thanks

It could be either. But from my experience when one goes it often throws enough shavings in the fluid to ruin the other.

But just in case check the fluid level and try a fluid change if you haven't done one recently.

The black grease shouldn't effect anything. But power washing and knocking the vacuum line off could.
