hello,

Lately my 82 300d Turbo has been idiling really rough,it is comparable to when you turn the airconditioning on. The power output is low too when I accelerate hard it takes a long time for the engine to catch up to my throttle inputs. Are these signs that compression in my engine is going? Also there seems to be a vacuum leak and I need to turn on my airconditioning in order for the car to turn off when I remove the key. Can anyone recommend a good mechanic to fix these problems in the Sacramento area?

Thanks

Rough idle could be any number of things, most likely worn/dirty injectors, or you need to have the valves adjusted (should be done every 15kmi). Less likely is injection pump problems. Low power could be a plugged line to the ALDA, or the switchover valve (in that same line) could be plugged. Vacuum leaks are most likely to be in the locking system or climate control vacuum system. Shops in the Sacramento area are:

1- Dealer (downtown or Rocklin - not cheap though)
2- G.A.S. (German Auto Service - quite reasonable, but they had my car much longer than expected)
3- Bertinis (in Roseville - cheaper than dealer, more than GAS)
4- Silver Star Motors (Fair Oaks)
5- Mercedes Serivce Center (downtown)
You probably won't like the prices at any of them, though. If you can, pick up a service manual and try to fix what you can yourself, and just have the really hard stuff done by a shop. Labor rates range from approximately $65 to $110 for the places listed above.
Good luck!
