I'm switching a '79 300sd engine to my 82 300d. Or trying to. Ive run into a roadblock.

Are either of the transmissions compatible? I have both transmissions, and they're both good (I'm relying on someones word on the 79 tho). If so, which transmission would work best?

I initially wanted to keep the 82 transmission because of the electrical connections on the two transmissions are different and I don't think the speedo will work if I put in the 79. I think some of the connections are on opposite sides of the tranny.

Then today, I realized that the 82 has a cable which attaches to the throttle, wheras the 79 has a rod. There was one other thing, but I cant remember what it was now. I suspect the rod is for shifting to first or something when accelerating? Not too sure. Are those things necessary? Is there any way I could ghetto rig that cable?

Has anyone done anything similar? Ive found a few threads that do help, but none of them really answered my questions. Anything helps.

Thanks,
Bri

This is going to be a hard one. You need to find somebody who did work on those models and is still alive :D
Welcome to the forum. I can't answer your question directly, but I did own 82 and 85 models and per my recollection the engine and transmissions were fully mechanical. Meaning no electric elements controlling those things. They had vacuum operated shut off valve and 85 had a vacuum system that might affect the transmission, but even that I am not sure about.
So whatever electric plugs you have -they are for other stuff not for drivetrain operations.
What tranny is better? Per my knowledge they are the same. I know that those transmission had common problem of bad shifting, but still lasted. Having everything outside, I would use the transmission that I know, than take somebody's word and risk several hr of work to test it.

So I finally got some more time to work on it. The tranny swap should be fine. :D I figured out the throttle thing with the cable, and I can just switch the entire throttle system from the 82 to the 79 engine. The other line should be OK too. I'll have to switch some of the fluid lines that go from the tranny to the radiator, but thats no big deal either. Thanks for the advice!

Torque converters

One more thing- I had to switch the torque converter, as well as the tranny, and in the process cracked the pipe thing that locks into the tranny. =/

Does anyone know which models would have the same torque converter as an 82 300d? Google didn't provide any answers.
