Just drove my recently inherited 79 240D from TX to PA. About 200 miles out, the speedometer failed. I am 80% certain that it is the cable. Before I jump under the car and start taking the bottom of the dash apart, are there any tricks that I need to know or areas to be careful of? I have done this before on older GM cars but not MB's. Any suggestions on where to get a proper length cable. The ones in the auto parts store are the "one size fits none" variety. Also, I used 1 1/2 quarts of oil for the 1800 mile trip. This is a 58,000 mile car that is in "like new" condition. Is this a normal oil burn rate for 75 mph driving on a diesel?
While I was backing my 79 240D up, I noticed that the lights flashed as I shifted from P to R. In R, the lights are out. Obviously the lights work, but something is out of adjustment. Any help on where to start the adjustment process on a 79 240D with AT?
Thanks,
Gary
