1973 mercedes 280c

I'm glad I found this forum - it seems like a tremendous resource. I've been interested in a vintage Benz for a while and this 250c came up on Craigslist about 30 minutes from my house so I'm going to look at this over the weekend.

What should I look for? From reading the forum it seems rust is a major concern, especially if it's been in Ohio/the Midwest for a while.

Are there common issues with these?

I plan on making this a dd for at least the days above 32 degrees. I assume this will rust nicely with a nice coating of road salt.

Seems like mpg will be around 15 mpg which doesn't concern me much.

I appreciate any insight you can provide.

Also, is $2,500 a fair price?

I'm a little bit of a newb here as well, but I'll throw my 2 cents in. First off, it's a coupe, which is far more collectable and desirable than the sedan to most folks. Looks to be well maintained. I get the impression that current owner is a bit of an automotive enthusiast, which is good.

Things to look for:

Pull up the rubber mat in the trunk, and look for rust or repaired areas. Check front and rear windshield seals for dryrot and cracking. If they haven't been replaced, you can almost be sure they are cracked. If not leaking yet, the will eventually if cracked. That's where the trunk rust comes from.

Craigslist ad states some rust repair has been done, get details and then examine. Some shops just hide the rust without really repairing it. Makes the aftermarket chrome trim on the fender wells seem suspicious to me.

Speedometer and odometer working correctly?

Lots more, but I'll leave that to more tenured members to post.

yes look for rust. in the floors, under the seat, and under the gas pedal, and especially on the suspension mounts. good bet the exhaust will be rusty , there is a muffler and a resonator.

the 280c is called a W115 body, and has the OHC 6 M110 engine. it will have a 4 barrel carb that can be troublesome, you can replace with a weber or a holley if you want. check for smoke, driveability issues, stalling. also these cars have kingpins and subframe suspensions, and the mounts can get old, if it rattles or clunks, that can be the cause. it's got a steering box not rack and pinion and the steering may seem vague.

a W115 is a more difficult old car to keep in shape and driving nicely than a 73 dodge dart, but if you're handy the parts are not expensive and this forum is a great resource!

coupes are rare and really great when the windows are all down. if it has power windows, the switches are often the cause of the windows not working

good luck!

Thanks for all of the advice thus far! Is the price reasonable? It seems like a good deal...

Yup on the 6 vs 4, 114/115. Verry pretty for $25.

Think about it - if you can find a solid runner for that money, of any marque - you'll be dead and gone before it rusts away and you haven't gotten years of fun out of it for your money! And that's a MBZ Coupe! They don't make them like that anymore.

There will always be little niggly things like windows/sunroof/dome lights, AC, etc. Sounds like a runner, with a respray and some rust repair; already ahead of that game - these are $10k and less if pristine.

Just saying - if it's as good as advertised, you get a 280c for a grand less than I could sell my '75 Vespa scooter!

Give a report after you check it out - more feedback!

Good luck!

Full disclosure: I have a '71 250c - so I'm biased!

And as tcb323 said - window issues typically are switch related. Pop out, clean, reinstall, done.
