My wife noticed a couple of quarter size drops of oil on the garage floor passenger side. The first INDY I went told me that I needed to relplace the "electrical conductor plate" within the transmission at $675-$750 US.

The next INDY I went to showed me that I needed to replace the "A/T Plug Adapter"(p/n 1402700250), $15.00 plus a small amount of A/T fluid at a total cost of $150 US. I told him to go ahead and do it. Note: you want to wait till the exhaust cools down before you put your hand into this area otherwise you may burn yourself.

Afterwards he showed me the part and explained that the O-ring's can go bad and not only allow a small amount of oil to the ground but A/T oil can go up the electrical cable to the transmission control module (TCM) and damage it. So it is a smart thing to get addressed ASAP. This 2000 car had 25K miles.

NEW p/n 2035400253 - A/T Plug Adapter (Conductor Plate Connector) - MSRP $14.50

OLD p/n 1402700250 - A/T Plug Adapter (Conductor Plate Connector) - MSRP $8.50

"It'is held by a bolt centered in the connector. This is after pulling out the actual electric plug. The 7mm connector bolt is attached to the housing so there's no risk of dropping it. In other words, the new part comes with the bolt and makes it very easy to figure out once you've bought the new part."

Hey Lynn’s

How did you get on with your gearbox? Did you manage to replace the A/T adaptor as described in your post and make good of all issues.

I notice also you have reached Veteran status inside of 10 months, congratulations on that.

A true asset to the Club.

Thanks for the kind words.

Yes, the A/T plug adaptor has been replaced with the p/n stated above and no more minor leakage.

How's that beautiful metallic car of yours doing? How many kilometers does she have at this time?
Hi Lynn

I have covered just over 44,000 miles now, man I love these cars.

With only 1,164 SL600's made Worldwide in 1997 my guess is that you have a one of kind in the UK.

Hey, I know this post has been done for quite a while now. But I was wondering if anyone knew where I can get my hands on those two o-rings mentioned above? My 95 SL320 is leaking, seems as if its the same issue. The ATF spreads underneath my car as I'm driving and when my pan/exhaust get hot it starts smoking in and outside of the car. (Freaked me out the first time it happened! Haha)

But yeah, any help would be very appreciated!

P.S. newly registered, but I've been reading this forum for years! Love it!

The O-rings are not separately available, buy the new and improved connector noted above and it comes with them. There is a DIY in the W210 forum help stickies on this replacement, I did it myself in about 45 minutes from time I got out the jack until the time I was washing my hands. Not difficult but the higher you raise the front end, the less fluid will leak out while you have the connector out.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg
Well, LynnS had provided the P/N, just take that to the Dealer and ask for it. Or get them online, but I have a feeling the Dealer would be cheaper when you don't have to pay shipping.

I tried looking up the part numbers online before posting. Unfortunately, the only website that had them is from New Zealand. The shipping is 5x the price of the actual O-ring.

Anyway, the reason I want to know the sizes before I go to a dealer is because I have a stack load of O-rings that may fit and rather use instead.

Thanks!
In that case may be you can just remove it from your car and compare physically it with your collection of O-rings to pick one that fits. It would be difficult for somebody else here to provide you with a measurement unless they have a spare one on hand.
The only problem with taking it out and seeing if I have one that fits is what if I don't? I'm pretty sure the current O-Ring is beyond dry and will brake as soon as I take it out. I don't want to go a week without my car while I order the right rings. I guess you're right, though. I'm just gonna buy the entire piece and hope it comes with the O-Rings!

I'm getting it from: 1995 Mercedes SL320 Automatic Transmission Plug Adapter - Transmission - APA, OES Genuine - PartsGeek

Don't bother ordering it online, shipping will eat up any cost savings. I got mine at a VERY greedy dealer for $12 and change. There is only the one, so no chance of getting the wrong one anyway, and it comes with both O0rings.

They aren't dried out or cracked, and it's not really the O-rings anyway but the plug design.

Greg

I wouldn't screw around with O rings I had lying around. MB got this wrong twice. The first generation seal was silicone orange, a good quality O ring but NG. Next generation was the white one pictured. The final solution if it actually works, is the new connector that comes with the black O rings shown.

Plus 27. It's not just the O-rings, there are design changes to the plug, too.

Best case scenario, you have a leak that drips, worst case the outer O-ring seals but the connector leaks and sends fluid up the harness into the TCM, you write a big, fat check to the dealer (about 90 times the cost of the connector).

Go to the dealer, buy the thing (I think they call it a spacer adapter, but they'll know exactly what you mean, they all have them in stock) and it comes with the O-rings. I just did this like three months ago.

While we're on the topic, if you haven't serviced the AT itself you may as well go ahead and do that at the same time.

Forget about O-rings your not dealing with 12 soft top hydraulic cylinders.

Just buy the 'A/T Plug adapter' p/n 2035400253 for $15.00 at your local dealer and verify with your VIN.

Or Mercedes Benz of Ft. Lauderdale or Parts.com

Welcome to the R129 Forum!

Are you sure it's trans fluid that's your problem? If you have that much oil under the car that it's smoking I'm concened that the trans oil may have made it's way up electrical cable. And even if it hasn't your are still going to need trans fluid and a couple of different parts in order to add to the oil level at 80 degrees C. If it is trans oil why not consider doing a complete oil change. Please read http://www.benzworld.org/forums/2394646-post8.html

Or could it be that you need a new valve cover gasket?
I had the same leaking problem back in December. For me it was the pan gasket. Mechanic also placed the old o ring for free. Nice of them.

By the time you pay $6.00 for the part plus $7.00 5-7 days ground ship = $13.00 you could buy the part at your Dealer for $15.00 tomorrow.
Hey, thanks for the advice! I am going to pick up the part from my local dealer today. (as it is obviously a better deal.)

I hope that this is my only problem. I put the car on a lift at a friends shop and I can see the oil surrounding the plug and the wire just like mentioned by other people with this same issue. I also see how the fluid could get on the exhaust and start smoking too.

As for my fluid changes, I do them frequently. Actually this leak started after my recent ATF change. (I was missing about 2 bottles in there before) I might have put a bit too much?
