I was hoping to report to all of you that my 5 speed in my new 96 420 was now shifting perfectly, but I'm sorry to have to report:frown it isnt quite right yet.
When I got it there was a long delay between shifting the lever into P and actual engagement. I hoped naively this might be a fluid issue so it got fluid, filter and connector right away. (no sign of leakage into the cable) Didn't change shift delay a bit. Except for the delay, the shifting was smooth and quick. Then a couple weeks ago I started to get a harsh 2-3 shift which got worse quickly. 3-4 was a bit harsh in short order and 4-3 thumped and then went into a false neutral until I shut off the car and restarted. This is on a 120k mi. car owned all its life by an old man in Phoenix. I certainly did not expect much wear.
Some excellent DIY articles (thanks MAVA and G-AMG) convinced me I should replace the pressure spring, so I tackled it last week. I also replaced the three shift overlap sleeves with the o-ringed replacements and since I was in it that far I replaced the conductor plate as well. Shifting under way is back to being smooth and quick again, but the 4 second delay between the P-D shift and engagement is still the same.
What causes this frustrating delay and how do I fix it?
Thanks for any help and suggestions,
Mike in ABQ
