Hello My 1989 Porsche 928 uses the Mercedes 722.3 automatic transmission. I previously had a problem with the vehicle not shifting from second to third only at high RPMS. I barely drove the car at all. Then when I went to fill it up it would not shift out of first gear. I took it to a Porsche mechanic and he said their is no second of third gear and I would have to get the transmission rebuilt. So I drained the transmission fluid. It was burnt, not that much metal shavings on the bottom of the pan. So Far the transmission cover and filter are off. I will be draining the fluid out of the converter tomorrow. Should I remove the valve body? If so will springs / small pieces fall off if I do? What should I check in the transmission while the cover is off? I started to loosen the bolts for the valve body to pull it off but I thought it would be a bad to have springs and plastic pieces flying everywhere. What should I check with the transmission? Should I get that shift kit installed (do i need to remove the valve body for that?)? thanks

And all this doesn't strike you as something like my mechanic telling me my braking problems are from pads worn to nothing and undersize worn discs and me responding with bleeding the brakes and tightening up the master cylinder?
