hi all,
I am new to this forum but am hoping you guys can help me.....I have just sold my 72 350sl which i importred from home in the uk and have owned for 17 years....its been layed up for around 2 years here in florida...tried to start it and there is no firing...no fuel pump sound, hooked up 12v direct to pump and it primes the system and car started briefly...i can here a dull clicking sound from the relay area under the right hand side footwell, how do i know that a relay is working...also upon the fuel pump priming i see some fuel leaking by the rails over the plug holes, i think this is the rubber hoses leaking or maybe have perished....can anyone help as the guy is meant to be coming to pick the car up in the next few days.

take the relays and fuses out and clean the connections, thats always a good place to start with a car thats been sitting as things have likely rusted or oxidized. Could be the fuel lines or the rubber boots on the injectors, check for dry rot or loose clamps.

The upper left relay behind the right kick panel is the FP relay. The one below it is the ECU relay. You can swap a relay from the right side to see if the FP runs.
Fuses and contacts should be checked also as stated.

If you have leaks on injector hoses, it can be dangerous. Check that hose clamps are tight at every connection. Many of these car had fires early on.

You can jumper the fuel pump relay so that fuel pump comes on whenever key is turned. Jumper connections are here somewhere. Normally the pump just runs briefly to prime system and then shuts off until starter is operated.

You can check pump is operating, by disconnecting fuel return hose at fuel damper and directing into a container. If you turn ignition on and off a few times you should see a substantial return flow (If you jumper, you should get 1L/30sec) If filter or tank screen is blocked, this should show that and its easy to do.

72 350SL not starting.

Ok, today I pulled out a burnt out alarm system...lots of wires ect...Managed to find in the floor rail that the fuel pump had been immobilsed in the harness by the alarm, removed the extra wiring and got it working!!! I also removed a spark plug and found i have a spark but still not starting,,, I did pour some raw fuel down the air intake and sprayed some quick start in there also...now before i removed the alarm, i also poured fuel into the air intake and the car was firing but not long enough to start because the fuel pump wasnt working,,,is it possable that the fuel in the air intake has done something??? Also i noticed fuel spraying across the rails and found 2 lose clamps on the two main fuel feeds to the rail, one each side...sorry i dont know all of the correct terms but i have never really played with these cars.
Any more ideas guys on what this could be,,,i have a week to get this car going!
Tony.

Not sure if the 350 is the same as my 450 but on mine theres a straight line coming out of the bottom of the tank thats about 8 inches long. On the end of that hose theres a clamp, undo the clamp and pull the line off and it will drain the tank.

My understanding was it fired up with priming before he disconnected the old alarm. Now the fuel pump works but not firing even after priming. I still would not put anymore than a couple of gallons of liquid gold into the tank when it is not starting. And definitely no additives.

ok, tonight i have left the car draining its fuel and tommorow I will change filter, is there any way that I can blow the system through using a little compressor or anything just to make sure something is not blocked. I will take your advice and not put any addatives in it....is it not worth putting in the injector cleaner...also is there anyone from the orlando area which might be able to help me that you guys know of ?
Again thanks for the advice guys....

Maynard's son has done a lot of work on two 1972 cars in the Orlando area. He was pretty busy when u tried to pay him for a PPI though. Perhaps if you get it running enough to get it to him, you'd stand a better chance of getting his help. He knows D-jet. That's for sure.
