I have never liked the standard exhaust on my 1992 600SL, far too quiet and you couldn't even see it. So I went to see a local exhaust specialist and asked if he could make me a four tailpipe system :).

Unfortunately not :(, not enough room for his particular brand of exhaust tips to fit. So anyway he agreed to make a custom (stainless steel) back box with twin chrome tips and fit fit the Renntech centre resonator bypass pipe I recently bought (to add a little noise).

He fitted the new back box yesterday and then phoned me to ask if the car was down on performance, which I said it was, was very difficult to get it rev past 5000, and my 0-60mph time had dropped to 11 seconds :(. He had found the problem :), the left cat had disintegrated and blocked the exhaust :(, big bill time! He then suggested he could fit two new sports cats that would do the job and not cost the earth. So I told him to go ahead and here are the results (below).

I am over the moon with the system, it is nicely aggressive in terms of noise and I like the looks (though they could have had the tailpipes exiting higher with a cutout in the bumper). Total cost was £220 for the back box and fitting, £450 for the cats and fitting and £90 for the Renntech resonator bypass, so £750 ($1500) for the lot. Haven't done a performance check yet but will do over the weekend to see what if any difference it has made.

SL600 Exhausts

I think the repair shop you used did a fine job of meeting-up the header pipes before the cats. I think this is a difficult fit and weld, and looks like they did a fine job. I believe you'll see a tremendous increase in performance. :)

I tried my Gtech performance meter on the car last night, but it is difficult to quantify the results as I didn't get a goof run prior to fitting new exhaust because of the clogged cat. Anyway if I base my assumption around the stock car performance of 0-60 in 6.1 seconds, the best I achieved last night was 5.8, so a pretty significant improvement. The car is being "chipped" today, so I'll run again and see if makes any difference against the 5.8 benchmark.

So how did the new chip turn out? If you like the performance increase would you share where you got the chip from? Do they do all R129's? SL500?

Lynn, I haven't got round to getting the performance meter out again and trying it, I have either been without the car (getting the steering angle sensor replaced to clear the ADS light) or it has been raining (which it seems to have done for the last month here). I promise I will get it out soon and post some figures. One thing I have noticed after doing the exhaust and chip is that I now get 1 mpg extra, might not sound a lot but it is 5%!!! I bought the chip off ebay.com (mbperformance is the seller) eBay Motors: 1992 93 94 95 MERCEDES 500SL SL500 PERFORMANCE CHIP (item 290123551031 end time Jun-06-07 18:02:09 PDT)

Hi StuartKnight does it really cost only 69$ and do they replace the standard ECU or just is an add on ? What kind of job is involved?

Cheers.

Hi, I paid $119 plus shipping for mine as I need two chips. I didn't fit them myself, my mechanic did but said it was very straightforward. Full instructions are included, basically remove ECU, unscrew loads of screws to get covers off, ease out old chip and insert new one making sure you get it the right way round. Reinstall ECU (pushes in) and away you go.

The top end restriction of 155mph is removed :), not that I have had the chance to test it yet, nearly did the other day when I got it to approx 155, but then hit traffic, British motorways are too busy these days (and that was 0630 on a Sunday morning!)

Lynn email the seller he was very helpful and proably does have the right one for your car.

Now I really must go and get my performance meter out.....

Hi StuartKnight,
Nice looking system you have...are the "sports catalytic converters" branded? I am considering having a exhaust shop do a complete change on my '91 500SL. I am very much inclined to fit headers, but don't know if any company actually made a set for the '91 500SL, would you have any information? At the very least, I would like to have the cast iron exhaust manifolds ceramic coated, as they look awful, retain the oxygen sensor, replace with sports catalytic converters or remove all together (if no better option), remove center muffler and still deciding if I will buy a branded rear muffler or go for a custom made staoinless steel piece.

Would appreciate the opinions/comments of you guys.

Chicky

Hi Chicky, I don't know if the cats are branded, the guy who made the system is a franchisee in the UK for Powerflow exhausts. All they do is make custom exhaust systems, I drove in told him what I wanted and a week later went back to have him make and fit it.

You will need the cats if you have emission regs, if you don't lose them immediately, the power gains are well worth it :).

Hi, because the V12 has two of eveything!! The left hand and right hand injection systems and ignitions have their own ecu's.

Finally got round to doing a run with my performance meter last night :)

Original (Mercedes quoted figure) 0-60 6.1 seconds
New exhaust and Green air filters 0-62 5.8 seconds
New ECU chip from Ebay 0-62 5.5 seconds

Note the second and third times are 0-62 and not 0-60 as my meter actually does 0-100kmh. I guess you can say the Ebay chips work, and they only cost me £60 ($120).

I must a 0-400 metres time as well!

Wow StuartKnight actually you achieved a great result and 0.3 sec IS a great result without spending a fortune.
If they did something for my M112 engine I would be very glad to get one (do I need only one ?) on the spot especially if it's as easy to install as your mechanic told you.
What kind of performance meter are you using and is it there a performance meter software for a GPS capable Pocket Pc.

Cheers.
