A red light runner took out my 560SL this week. See attached photo. No injuries. Other driver received citations for running the red light, expired tags and no current insurance. However, I did receive a message from her insurance company yesterday, so she must have somehow gotten her insurance current in the 24 hours since the accident. A witness to the accident right behind me was an off duty police officer, so her case is going to be pretty weak.

No numbers yet from the insurance companies or the body shop. Just looking at the parts I can see, the parts quote is going to be just over $10K. Then we'll have to add labor on top of that as well as whatever parts we discover once the hood is opened. I've got a $25K agreed value policy with my insurer, i.e. Hagerty. I guess I'll soon find out how they'll treat a major claim like this. Front frame is bent. Body shop has the equipment to straighten it, but Mercedes has a spec on how much bend is allowed to be straightened. I think my option would be to have it totaled, get my full insured amount out of it and look for another edition. However, I won't know until next week at the earliest whether that is going to happen. If any of you have any suggestions about dealing with agreed value policies, Hagerty and/or damage like this, please shoot me your advice. I'd like to be as knowledgeable as I can when making my decisions.

Len

OUCH! Sorry to hear about this Len. I'm assuming you're o.k.?

Hagerty should come through, they seem to have a good reputation. That being said, I'd be looking for a new SL. Anything hit hard enough to bend the subframe will reveal hidden effects of the impact down the road. Those defects won't be covered and they will affect your driving experience. They will also remind you that you are driving a rebuilt wreck. 107 prices are soft. You should be able to get whatever you want in a 107 with that kind of money to spend. Good Luck.

That sucks, I'm really sorry. And I'd be no help on the insurance, I've never dealt with anything like that. But good luck.

Sorry to see that Len. I know it's disappointing, to say the least, but I am glad to hear no one was hurt.

What a shame....but I'm glad you weren't hurt.
Take the 25K and run. Put pressure on them to scrap it.
You can buy a beautiful example for that kinda coin.

That is a sickening thing to happen. I have been through two of these. And it sure
doesn't help any by having to wait weeks, and sometimes months, before your car
is repaired or replaced. If you get another car, maybe you can get the insurance
company to sell you the old one for a parts car. Good Luck.

My sincere condolences. I know it was a nice one. I concur with no repair.

May she bring joy to others by donating her vital organs.

Rest in pieces.

That is very sad, It looks like it was in really good shape. Let us know how Hagerty works out. They insure my car. Make sure you get genuine MB sheet metal. In fact genuine MB everything.

Sorry for your loss and frustration.

If you need anything we have some really good people we get our parts from here in Charleston and we're in MB every couple of days so if John and I can help in any way let us know.

Len, add my sympathies as well. Not only am I glad no one was injured, I'm also glad you weren't driving some little econobox. She served you well, whichever way it comes out. Good luck in dealing with the insurance and repairs or replacement vehicle.

Take care and hope you can soon again enjoy the ride,
Greg

sorry for your mishap.. Thank God nobody got hurt , property can be replaced ,but lives cannot. As a bodyman and frameman , i recomend to have it totaled and if you have a place to keep it , buy it back as a parts car for future use. Good luck

It's a sad sight, but you are (hopefully) OK, you have good insurance (her insurance or lack thereof hopefully isn't your problem), and this car can definitely be replaced.

The other party's insurance will declare it totaled. They'll give you a value substantially less than the car's worth. I had this happen to another older car I had, a Porsche. In PA, unless you actually have the car registered as an antique, it will be valued as a used car, not as a collectible car. Not sure how your comprehensive will cover it, but I guess they should then pay you difference from the 25k. Try to keep the car - even this lowers the amount you get, for parts.
