Replacing brake pads on an SL is as simple as any other car. Just remember one crucial rule. If your car has ABS, ensure you disconnect the negative battery terminal prior to opening the rear break line. The system will sense a loss of pressure and automatically go to manual mode (front brakes only), thus the ABS will prevent any brake fluid from going to the rear brakes if the battery terminal is still connected. It only took me three frustrating days to figure this out on my 88 560SL.

Brake Job

When bleeding the brakes, insure that the brake fluid level is abovethe "FULL" line on the reservoir. If not, fluid will not carry over to the rear brake reservoir - on mine, anyway.
