The electric fan in front of the Radiator is controlled by a Temperature sensor on the Engine.

The electric blower fan on my 560SL sometimes seems to act as if something determines if it should be on ... perhaps a temperature sensor.

Just to add my 2cents....I was curious about this as well...on my '88 560SL just a few days ago...started car in garage, and after about 2 minutes when all stabilized, RPM 600, turned on AC..heard compresor engage, no electric fan..drove down the street for about 10 minutes with AC still on, pulled into a parking lot, opened the hood, and the electric fan was on....turned AC off, and soon afterward, the fan turned off...assuming that the fan needs both AC on, and temp warm..105F...this is at least the way mine works....

...I'll take the opportunity to ask this question more simply in this thread that I tried ask in another thread, that may have not been very clear...does moving the temp wheel from full cold, to into the detent for MAX cold, do anything other than increase the blower fan (not aux fan) to full high speed ?... in other words, does it do anything to the compressor's load/speed, or engine RPM ?.... apologies for " cross talking " between threads....

Not quite as settled as implied... "Min" also sets the compressor to full "on", and takes the temp control out of the loop (as does "max" when heating, no temp control) as well as set the fan to step 5. See the manual linked in the thread referenced here...

thanks for the info Ears...my problem is:

Temp wheel min( not detent)...acceleration from stop is great
Temp wheel min...in the detent...car stalls out

When you say "Min" also sets the compressor to full "on", I'm assuming you mean going from Min to Min in the detent, it's kicking up the compressor up a notch..if true, that's probably causing my stall from stop by increasing load...any thoughts on how to correct this ?... engine RPM's appear normal in all situations...

No increase in load or a different compressor "gear" or output. It just doesn't cycle according to the climate control temp (stays on more like a conventional air compressor system). I'd have to research if there is any fuel enrichment or otherwise that also occurs... I'll leave that to you. Someone here has a full climate control system manual I recall. Otherwise a fairly good read is in the regular FSM. A full diagnostic of the system is in order, ie is the charge quantity and type correct, is the compressor in good nic, etc...

thanks once again for the reply Ears...had new compressor installed about 10 yrs ago along with all components when I converted to R134.. last year evacuated and refilled with R134...blows great cold air...your comment on fuel enrichment in the detent min position has me thinking....will do more research and let you know....have a happy and safe 4th...

My electric fan does not run with the AC on. I can run 12 volts directly to the fan and it works great. So should I wire 12 volts directly to the fan and operate it manually (whenever it is hot) or should I troubleshoot the system... if the latter what would you check first?
