Hi all,

I'm back after long absence, had to take a bit of a break in the very slow restoration of my long suffering SEC, but I'm finally making some more progress. I'll post some pictures soon of a rather large amount of rust that is being removed from around my rear windscreen!

In the meantime I have a question about the rear deck. If I was going to peel the carpeting material off it, what would be a good material to replace it with? I'm looking for as close a match to the original as possible ideally. I've looked and looked, but I can't find anything similar that would seem to be OK to glue the base board.

The reason I'm asking is that somebody in the long-distant past decided to put two giant 12" speakers under the rear deck in my car. They then pulled out the two opening trays in the back and covered the whole thing in some pretty thick carpet. Now, years later it's all falling apart and since I've had to take the rear window out (amongst other things), I figure now is a good time to put the it back as it was originally. I've sourced a second-hand parcel shelf in decent condition, with the original trays and even the original first-aid kit still intact. But, the material is badly sun-damaged and it's the wrong colour. My interior is blue, the one I've acquired is black.

So, I'm not trying to figure out how best to re-cover this. I've thought about leather, suede or alcantara but I think all three won't look right. I think it's got to be some sort of velour, similar to the original. I need something that's going to adhere pretty well to the backing board, and should also stretch around the curves in the rear deck.

Anyone have any ideas?

Chris.

I just was at Joann's looking at the material that is on sale for the headliners, however its foamed back and I don't think it would hold up. So I am in the same boat as you. I want to replace the old faded material and am looking for the velour type with a kind of canvas back. Anyone had any luck

Why dont you remove it, wash with dawn or joy, rinse and dry. Salvage what you have and paint it with SEM or DupliColor. In fact, get the paint you need and respray the entire car to match.
