Hi!

I am looking for a 500SEL Euro motor and want to get the most horsepower available to put in my 380sel with a blown motor.

There is a wikipedia table Mercedes-Benz M117 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that says the 1987 was 195hp??? Is that right??

Apparently not all 117.963 motors are the same?

If so, does anyone know if it'll bolt to my transmission (I think it's a 722.310)

Nope, surely it should be more than that? My 420 is 218 i think. The gearbox should bolt up fine, but from what i read in the search archives there is the crankshaft position sensor which is the only difference, and depends on if gen 1 or gen 2 'boxes.
Have a search through, theres quite a few threads on i, i've been pondering similar question.

US versions of the 5.0 were rated at 181hp, Euro 231hp

Your best bet is to locate a Gen1 (82-85) 5.0 euro and bolt it up.

bondavi, that is awesome! I found a 500SL motor (listed as 500sl euro - maybe a typo?) Do you know if this is compatible?

Actually performing the engine swap is no problem for me. I just don't know exactly what is compatible.

Do you know if I'll need the 500SEL engine computer as well?

The horsepower in my euro 500SEL is awesome, so def try getting one if you can find it. The american version not so much, and you WILL notice the difference in HP between the two. Good luck bud.

Starting with MY 1986 the 5.0 engines were M117.965. Your obstacles there are the crank sensor at the rear of the block(later transmissions had a cut-out for it as mentioned above) and the K vs KE engine management system. Also, I think you'd have a difficult time trying to find that engine(260HP 5.0 euro) in the US.

I'd look for a 1980-85 M117.963 euro engine.
1980-1981 ~240HP
1982-1985 ~230HP
