She looks nice, I punched in the person's number on Google and saw they were selling other Benz items. Unfortunately, you only get 4 pictures on craigslist unless you code more in, and those four pics don't tell a lot. I found a 300D on there, only to find it listed on another site with a lot more pics. Then I could see the numerous dings, scratches, tears on the inside and missing lug nut covers.

Another one I looked at looked pretty good, and the ad mentioned 3 minor problems, but when I saw it the rear quarter panels were halfway gone due to rust, there were way more than 3 minor problems and it was a total junker that someone unfortunately neglected.

I'd say it can't hurt to take a look at it, but those pictures might be deceiving. I hope it turns out to be a beautiful one though.

This is the SAME car another "member" boasted about buying and awaiting shipment. Looks like the deal fell through.

AFAIK.. there was never a "4:11" ratio GT differential offered by AMG.

The seller's name is Bill and I've talked to him on the phone a couple of times and emailed a couple of times. I found the car on Craigslist a few months ago and investigated it. From what he told me, it sounded like a real AMG 500SE Euro. He bought it about six (maybe eight) years ago and drove it for awhile. Then he let his parents drive it, then he got it back and has been driving it only occasionally. He admits to knowing a lot about American cars, he says he's a car guy, but he also says he knows little of MBs and AMGs. From what he described to me, the car has original AMG bits on it - how they got there, I don't know - neither did Bill. As for the floormats, those look exactly like the set that came on my 1984 280E AMG - those where the real 1984 AMG mats on my car.

I explained to him the 4.11 gear thing, and he quickly admitted he had no idea what ratio was in the rear, but he said the car flat out screams getting up to highway speeds and turns about 4k at 75 mph. To me, that would certainly indicate a ratio in the upper 3s. He sold it to a guy in New Hampshire for $5000, then that guy balked when he found it was going to cost $1000+ for shipping.

If I was in Cali, I'd be interested in the car as a project - it sounds neat, it's Euro, it sounds like it might be real, and his price is awfully fair. Here's his ebay ad:

I have to agree with POS about the diff ratio. I've never heard of a 4.11 in a Mercedes. Also POS says the seller knows a lot about American cars, and a 4.11 posi, is a very popular American muscle car rear differential gearing, so I'm sure he doesnt know the gearing for sure, but is going with what he would expect it to be(due to its performance)due to knowing about American cars.

4,000 rpm at 75 Mph.?

The differential must be the 3.46 then, but even that one would only run 3,400 rpm at 75 mph.

Bought the car!

Hey guys!

If you previously read from my previous posts. I had bought a real 500sec AMG from DaveD as CASCADE can verify that. Since then, i have fixed the front AMG air dam and cleaned up the car and let me tell you that it looks sinister. I will post pics real soon.

Second purchase came when a local friend told me to get a hold a real 300ce amg widebody. I drove to see the car and fell in love with it. I ended up buying it and will post pics as well.

I am going absolutely nuts..............i think. So now this car comes up on craigslist. I drove to see the car and again fell in love with it. Its the quickest w126 i have ever driven. Yes its a real deal. Has all the mods. Stunning condition inside. Everything works and operational. I will fix the front AMG airdam as it faded and needs repair. I will also repaint the front grill as well. I would like to call it my best purchase ever. The guy gave it away in my humble opinion. Not a rattle. Gave me records and the mileage is accurate. Not a crack on the dash. I will post pics once i fix it up. I will also post pics with all three beast together.

You guys have made me an AMG junkie. i would never sell these cars and plan to own for a long time and pass it along to my son ( he is only 4).

Now i just need a 10 car garage. Also, ordered CLK63 black series at my local El Dorado Hills dealership. I am on a binge. My wife told me its time to stop and says why i want these older cars but she is OK with the new one ordered. What does she know...............You guys know that how special these older AMGs are.

Enough of my diatribe..............PICS coming soon once i am done fixing the new purchase.

thanx for reading...........

Congratulations. I talked to the Seller back when he had it on CR and it sounded real to me too. Glad it went to a good home. And you're right, he did give it away. It was an absolute swinging deal for someone.

Climb under the rear and tell us what the tag says on the rear diff - I still want to know what gear is in there. While you're at it, post some better pics than he had!

Thought I'd wake up this old thread so as to complete the history of this car which I'm now selling.

I took it on from kain786 (Aamer) and redid the interior since it had suffered a bit under the LA sun - new wood, new door panels, center console, etc. The engine was and still is very strong. Here's a vid I took today:

It's a classic example of an 80's car which was transformed into an AMG before being imported from France to the USA. It's a Euro shorty and a nice one at that, and it was finished in a rather unique colour too, 501 Orient Red.

I could probably get away with keeping it (i think my better half understands my addiction now...), but either way the car needs someone to take it to the next level and I'd prefer it to be someone from the BW family.

Here are the pics of it today -

Here's a pic from the eBay ad when I bought it, Feb 2009 -

And here's a pic from the original CL ad, May 2008 -

So whats the info on the car now? What AMG components does it have, did we ever find out the differential ratio the car has? Shame on the wheels, but the car looks much better with a fresher looking bodykit than it did!

3.27 rear LSD

AMG ground effects and suspension, plus the steering wheel. Exhaust was switched to straight pipes and a magnaflow muffler.

No engine mods from what I can tell, but it runs very strong - a perfect recipient for more aggressive cams.

Wheels - well, easily changeable. The Aero's are on my SL, and I've a set of the original BBS's too.
