Well, here's one for someone with $40K to burn....
Mercedes Benz E Class E500 500E | eBay

I do like the anthracite with black interior myself, but I could understand it getting old.
That is NOT Anthracite paint. That is Pearl Black (code 199). Anthracite Gray is a completely different color (code 172).

Also, the same car was posted by Karl a few days ago, post #589 (oh, the irony!).

The 500E was originally not supposed to be offered in any non-metallic colors. Apparently some people were able to special-order them though, as a handful of them did sneak out of the factory in white, Signal Red, Imperial Red, Pajett Red, Midnight Blue, and probably another couple non-metallic colors. There are very few of them, but they do exist...
Dave how could you forget 040 Black ???

Oops, my bad. The Pearl Black name slipped my mind when I posted. Also, sorry for posting a repeat! :)

red

I had a silver car with red interior once...back in the day those were pimp combinations for cars.
For some reason, I love the outrageous lipstick-red leather interiors of some of those mid-80s BMWs. However, the first car I owned was a red 1980 VW rabbit with red vinyl seats, red carpet, red steering wheel, red fisher-price-like plastic dashboard, red everything, and it was absolutely repulsive!

So wise in what you said though, color is definitely subjective. In addition to that, my subjective opinion seems to change fairly easily through time: I initially did not like my black on black 500E compared to my charcoal with grey interior 400E, but I've now reversed my opinion.

People are weird and stuff. :)

Ha, my first watercooled car was an '80 Rabbit diesel, with that gawdawful brothel red everything interior. The only things redeeming about the car were that it was free, got 40mpg and that it racked up 275k when it finally died.

Nice 036, btw

1st 500E I've seen

I was getting on the interstate riding the BMW and while merging I spotted a W124 ! So I pulled on up to see what it was , a 500E ! ,,,,,,,,, Well his windows were tinted , and it really got to looking kind of ,,, oh , strange , ( not in a good way) those front fender flares look out of place on the freeway , like a over - do , we did not engage , I drove on .
as in away .:devil

Karl, The car looks fantastic and the monos just finish it off perfectly. Ya gotta love 040 and matching cladding! (but I'm a little biased) ;)

A bit overpriced? What are these going for ???

1993 Mercedes Benz 500E
That's the average price for a 500E.

Keep in mind, only around 1100 and change were imported, vs 11,000 400E's

Sticker price was $80K vs $56K for a 400E /E420

The market for them is $10K to $40K depending on condition.

Agreed...from a enthusiast standpoint, you'd want one ideally well sorted out mechanically, unless you're a masochist. Which is gonna put you at about $20K and then you go up from there for paint & cosmetic condition.

There have been some deals out there from $10-$15K, but they needed serious attention. Always be wary of a seller that says; 'it just needs a few tweaks' or, 'it just has few issues'. If that's so, then they should have fixed the minor 'issues' before the sale. In most cases, it speaks badly of the owner because he's tired of the car, or over-invested in the car....either way, he's not taking care of the car. And a lot of E500E sellers think nothing of a last minute $300-$400 detail job to make the car look first rate...even though it hasn't been taken care of like that for yrs.

However, this isn't meant to take away from the real enthusiasts, that lavish lots of needed care on these cars...just a caveat about some E500E owners/sellers.
