Hello,

I will keep this brief but in a nutshell the battery on my '92' SL was forever going flat and after spending sometime with a meter and fuse pulling it turned out to be the central locking module 'thingy' that was forever drawing current. It was completely shot and I had noticed an odd burning smell in my boot for a while . The central locking had failed some weeks before so I should have picked up on this earlier I suppose. Anyway the dillema is that the lockable centre consoles, the one with the two sliding covers and the one that doubles as an arm rest, and both the narrow door storage compartments are locked by the system and now I cant get in them. Is there any way of getting into the pipework and either pressurising or creating a vacuum that will then release these compartments?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards

Ian

Applying vacuum to the line from the pump shown in the diagram above should unlock all of the compartments. This can be done with a hand-held pump. Autozone stores in the U.S. loan these out for free and sell them for about $40.

I have a vacuum pump that is perfectly good except that its motor is burned-out, Ian. If you are interested in buying my pump or selling your motor, then send me an email or PM.

Thanks for both the speed and quality of reply to my question. I have a Mity Vac somewhere in my garage so I will get that out over the weekend and give it a go.

Bobterry, I will let you know on the purchase/sales of any parts.

Thanks again.

Only me again!

OK this box which loads of yellow plastic pipes terminate into, most are bright yellow and for some reason I went for the only clear one there when I decided which one to apply a vacuum to which . . . . did nothing. Tomorrow I am going to do the same to a slightly thicker yellow pipe which has a green tracer running down it. Will let you know what, if anything, happens.

You can study the diagram and count the position of the line at the distributor:
Example : Item #44 is for the glove compartment, and if you follow the line, it leads to the third connector at the distributor box. So if you pull that line and apply vacuum, it should unlock the glove compartment.

or just apply vacuum at line 53 and it should be good for everything (unless there is a leak somewhere)

This should be the correct one. At any rate it is definitely the one that terminates at the pump port labeled "IZX".

No need to anthing more than apply vacuum...

Whooo Hoooo !! I am in all my previously locked compartments but it was not as easy as I first hoped it would be. After trying the thicker yellow pipe which has the green tracer on it nothing happened and the Mity vac applied a god vacuum which the system held. So I tried every other pipe in turn but with the same result i.e. nothing.

With all pipes reconnected and thoughts of now forcing my way in to the locked compartments I disconnected the yellow/green from the unit in the boot and instead of applying a vacuum a simply placed my mouth around it and blew with no more pressure than that needed to inflate a balloon and hey presto! everything clicked and opened.

Not sure if this indicates a fault or not but pressure & NOT vacuum did the job.

Thanks for the input.
