A gentleman from Winnepeg, Manitoba (or Winterpeg, Man-its-cold-here if you're a fellow Canuck[;)]) contacted me yesterday concerning obtaining a 5-speed manual w/OD and wondered if I could point him in a direction to find one. I know he has a 300GD but I am only quite sure he has an om617A conversion (I must not have been listening very well). I don't think he frequents this board, he got my name through my mechanic.

Can anyone help?? I can get you in touch with him or vice versa.

Steve, I have one of these in my truck and they are rare in North America. They can be ordered through MB but are very expensive. I think the best bet is to find one in Europe possibly with help with G fanatics over there. Harald had some posts with German Ebay listings that were amazing. A brand new one in a box and used ones. 4X4Rancher might be willing to help.
I really like mine. The OD 5th allows cruising at 3000 rpm at 65mph. Perfect. I have not had a problem with low enough gears for the offroad work I do. My truck is offroad daily but it doesn't need to crawl boulders or over Hummer2s. Does fine in very steep make you very nervous places. Happy to talk to him if he would like.

Just be sure to tell him that the torque of an OM617A will kill a Getrag GL275 over time. I'm sure Tjærand can confirm this.....[|)][:D]

The 5-speed getrag is not made to cope with the turbo torque. I blew mine doing 120km/h after a long period of noisy bearing sounds. Transmission oil was geysiring from the bellhouse bleed-hole. Pictures of the mayhem coming soon... Automatic transmission on its way in...

I maintain the Getrag box behind a 617a is fine if the box is re-built with up-grade bearings.
I have a 5spd on my shelf wich I would be happy to ship as is or modified.

I also have spare a 4spd military.

There was a 5-speed military box with the super low gearing on the www.extrem-motorsport.de website a while back. It was on "special" at 1400 eur. don't know how special that is... but new low gear boxes are hard to find.

This is super-interessting 4x4rancher, could you tell us more about your up-grade re-build?
Which bearings, costs, how and where have you had this done? I've heard from several G-friends that when they ask for a re-build of a Getrag box the mechanics shakes their heads mentions "auto'box or 4-speed manual".[|)]

Iver, the "new" factory-rebuilt boxes Fjeldstad are offering are upgraded with stronger bearings. Hence the price...

Iver.
I don't know if you are aware of the company "Hewland"
they have a plant close by me here at Silverstone, I have my boxes specialy rebuilt here using Timken Precision Race Bearings, However I note TJ has posted some thing in your own country, I guess you won't need my help.

Ciao

What does a rebuild there cost? Do you have a list of bearing numbers for the rebuild? I'm thinking of taking mine apart before bolting the turbo 617A to it. I really like this 5 speed and do not want to break it. Thanks,

Rancher, it's always good to know of alternatives, I do at least have one friend that would be interested, as the Norwegian specialist Fjellstad is know to take premium prices a few of their services.

Guys, i have a 460 , 230G, what's the gearbox number?
By the way i've put the W123 4 speed, never had the chance to test the original one, my brother broke it a long time ago[:)] . By the way the W123 costs 50 us dollars in lebanon.
Anyone has tested the W123 gearbox on the G ?

Why dont you wait see how daves mil box works out I have found it well suited to road Gs with the snail 1st ratio as a super slow off road especialy in low ratio TB, I think if you look at the ratios compared to a 5spd getrag the top four are not disimilar to the top 4 on the mil box with only the 1st gear being extra low and never hardly used on road, with the 617a engine you will almost allways move off in 2nd.
