Hey guys,

I was surfing through CL and came across this:

1992 190e 2.6 5speed

The serial number has "126" in the first set of numbers. Would this make this a W126 5-speed? Or is it a W201. The W126 ones do not seem to have the "R" in front of them.

Just wondering, thanks

As far as I know, the manual transmission in the 190E was the same as the 300Es (the W124) AAAND I'm pretty sure it was put into a few other cars of the 80s-ish generation.

My manual trans I pulled from an '87 2.3 starts with 124. It'll fit. The hard part about the swap is the 2.6 flywheel. I've been told its different than the 2.3 flywheel. Now, I've heard the post 88-89 manual trans were different but that might be the EVOs. I'm guessing even then 2.6 sportline as the 2.3, even the '87. Check the auto>manual thread in my signature.

Wait...W126, in the sportline...um, I'm gonna look into that. BUT, I can say that it will fit any way. The 2.6 and the 2.3 bolt up to the same transmissions. The sportline package didn't have a different engine, just a bunch of other minor (but awesome) mods from the factory.

Don't get confused between serial numbers and part numbers.

Part numbers stamped onto the side of transmissions could very well be the part number for the casting and not the number for the whole transmission.

The number you need - the code for the transmission - is the start of the serial number.

All 5 speeds of the W201 era start with 717.

If it is a 716 (of that era) then it is a 4 speed.

The manual transmission types fitted to the 2.6 were

717.432
717.435
717.450

Thanks for the tips guys.

I was going to buy this, mainly because of how rare the 5-speeds are for the W201 (or for any Mercedes in America for that matter), but since I do not own a W201, nor do I have any sort of desire to convert my W124 to manual, I might pass up this deal. I figured with the "126" tag, it might bolt up to my OM617 that is going to be swapped into my 240D, and that I would have the super rare euro 5-speed.

Since I'm not really up for cutting a transmission to fit, I'll have to sit with my 4-speed.

The W126 is split into 1st generation and 2nd generation - just because the the part number designation is 126 it doesn't necessarily mean that it will fit on the first gen W126 let alone a W123...

That is a good point, and W126 5-speeds are as rare as they come (nonexistent) in the states anyway.
