MB lists the horsepower for the 5.5 litre engine in the CLS 550 as 382.

They list the horsepower for the 5.5 litre engine in the SLK55 as 355. The SLK55 engine is special, hand built by a single employee, etc. Why then is the SLK55 AMG, MB performance division, built engine 27 hp less than the 5.5 "stock engine?"

Thanks

Because it isn't supercharged.

You're comparing apples and oranges, of course, and should instead compare to other "55" engines in other AMG models. Most of those are supercharged.

The "55s" are based on the old M113 engine and you're comparing this to the new M273 (soon to be replaced too).

The "63" AMG engine was never configured for the AMG SLKs.

You can take to the bank that Mercedes will never install an "equal" AMG engine in the SLK as compared to the SL, just as C-class AMG engines aren't "equal" to E-class AMG engines. It's pay to play.

It's the biggest engine available for the SLK.

Best is to look at the SL ... the "550" engine is available in it, and for AMG versions you get a 6.3.

Before the 550 arrived, in the SL you got an M113 that was 5.0 and the AMG had the 5.5 version of basically that same engine, although as noted supercharged.

The "550" engine simply isn't available in the SLK, and the old, nonsupercharged 5.5 is all you can get.

The older engines are 3 valves/cylinder, while the newer ones 550/M273 and the 6.3 AMG are 4 valves/cylinder.
