My car's a 1976 and has no center armrest, but I have seen several pictures on the net of cars of the same vintage with the fold-down center armrest.
Anybody know what year this feature/option appeared or if it is an after-market add-on?

Whether original or add on, you, like me, will have to go aftermarket or get lucky on ebay, if you want one. They're not cheap, but we really like ours.

same situation with my 79, on the lookout for a palomino armrest, on a side not, picked up a great condition hard top for $400 locally

Any colour will do. With today's dyes and stains you can colour match to whatever you want. My armrest was originally blue but matched the brown upholstry quite nicely once painted..
