$4500.00 dollars is what the dealer quoted us on steering rack, pump, and HOSE. I have done exhaustive research thanks to Benzworld. Our car is a '99 ML320 with 174,000 miles. The HOSE appears to be the only thing leaking. Since it is a MY 99, the hose was already done on the recall in 1999.
Should I go to an independent and just have the hose changed?
Should I try to find used parts?
The ML steers fine and does not "whine" at all when turning.
We have had the truck for 10 years and it has been GREAT!
Any advice on which direction would be appreciated.

Thank you

Kevin

Take it to an independent shop and see 1) if they even think you need all that and 2) what they are going to charge for the work. My whole family refuses to go to an MB dealer anymore because of their blatant, flagrant, and pitiful instances of overcharging and incompetence.

If you find a good shop, you'll be in good shape.

I would source the hose yourself (autohausaz.com) and a couple of botttles of correct MB power steering fluid (same source) then find a indie to do the work AND make sure they use the correct bleeding procedure.

Keep the beat !

The first couple of recalls on this repair have been superseded by this one. Their first attempt was just to use a different clamp and that didn't work.

Now they are replacing the hose and clamp. Because you already had this done in 1999 has no bearing on not receiving the correct repair; that is why they came out with this revision.

Also note at the bottom of page 5 they list the proper hose for each model, so be aware of that if you so desire to repair it yourself.
