1987 420SEL with 200K miles has a clacking sound when the engine runs for the few seconds it does - the clacking comes from the lower passenger side of the engine. It does not run long enough to produce smoke so I don't know if it does. There is coolant in the oil :(
Is better to rebuild or replace this engine and how much should each option cost? There has been regular maintenance on this car and all else in really in excellent condition.

Thanks in advance for your esteem assistance.

Given the mileage, if you can find a good used engine that would probably be your best bet. I really couldn't comment on cost. The engine itself should be a couple or few hundred dollars. Someone on here should be able to say approximately how many hours of labor it takes to swap an engine.

I would try to find a decent used engine from a wrecking yard.
Experienced mechanics can tell a lot by looking under the valve covers, how the engine turns from the crank and so on. Definetely worth the extra $.
Also, a donor car with accident damage means it was running.
Looking at wrecking yard cars, sometimes engines have acid washed (silver) heads and chain tensioner, from a recent valve train / timing chain / head rebuild.

So is having a recent valve train / timing chain / head rebuild a good thing?
