ok so I posted the Mog nightmare post and it turned out thankfully to not be a blown motor but instead the fan hitting the pulley. So I think we have isolated the problem to be the rubber underneith the metal fan that it turns on is coming loose. The piece I'm referring to is kind of like the harmonic balancer from what I'm told.

Well I pulled the radiator and took out the 6 bolts holding on the Fan, but I can't get it off!

To get the fan off do you need to remove the big 1 3/4" nut in the center of the fan? I tried to get that sucker loose and boy is it tight. I had to hold the fan with a crow bar and it started bending the fan blade so I stopped.

Where am I going wrong?

Should I just shave some metal off the fan blade to give it some clearance so that it doesn't hit the pulley? I think this would be a temporary solution that would work for at least a year or so, what do you think?

only thing i remember is the torque spec for that crank bolt is 500 N*m, not reverse threaded. If you're trying to hold it, best to hold the crank at the ring gear. Even better, know someone with a 1" impact gun.

Thanks for the quick feedback, Bill is your fan metal or plastic? I tried to get it off with a couple crow bars and it's moving but I don't know if I need to put some more muscle behind it or if it that center nut needs to come off?

I can't get a impact gun in there without taking off the grill, or cutting a hole in the grill, which I don't want to do. Oh and my fan spins clockwise so it's not reverse thread, I thought about that too but it then figured out it couldn't be.

Should I try harder to get the fan off without taking that nut off? Has anyone else removed their fan? My fan is a metal fan.

Thanks

I had one do the same thing once. It is caused be rust between the fan and center spacer that is under the bolt. I had to remove the bolt (more on how later) and then use a puller to pull the pulleys and fan off as one. only after it was in my hands could I get the two apart by pressing out the spacer that runs down the middle of the two.
As for removing the bolt, it has a sealer on it (something like locktite). So you have to heat the bolt first with a torch and then use the impact to remove. Best bet is to tip the cab so you have room to work. Since you have to change the harmonic balancer to do the repair right, just grin and bear it! By the way I still have a good used harmonic balancer if you need one.

I have never tipped the cab forward, is it a pain or not too bad? I have a friend who has an impact gun and socket set big enough for that bolt. So the heating with a torch and hitting it with an impact wrench is no problem but what's the procedure for tipping the cab, any pointers or tricks to know?

Von I sent you a PM about 3 weeks ago regarding your harmonic balancer, but I never heard back form you. I am interested could you wither PM me or email me at [email protected]

Thanks everyone.
