Yes you're correct. No more 3rd row seat for 2006 M-Class.
If you still want Mercedes with 3rd row seat you should get one of the remaining 2005 ML's or wait for upcoming R-Class or G-Class [:(]

I am not too happy about it....
being a M-class fan for years I am very disappointed.
I wonder why MB remove this option.[:(!]

This will change my mind buying a CLK instead.

I'm equally as disappointed. However, remember what the competition is - none of them has a 3rd row. Though not offered this time around, remember also that there's still a long wheelbase W164 in the future. That will have 3rd row and probably be somewhat better than the My06 W164. Wait!!!

The G-Class will be a larger 7-seater with more room than the W163, but still off-roadable. The R-Class will be a 6-seat people hauler. Since M-B was widening their line, they didn't want three 3-row vehicles.

I think I would agreed with Darkmann I should wait for the long wheel base version.
Maybe there is a chance for 3rd row seat.
I think the R-class is more less like a VAN.
What do you guy thinks?

The LR3 has third row seats available, very nicely outfitted too, with a third row sunroof, airvents and big windows.

The Lr3 is a suv from landrover is the replacement for the discovery. It is qoutie nice but abit bulky
Yes, ponderous, heavy (5,600+ lb.) and terrible mileage. It does have quite a bit of room, and I like the exterior. Interior is less successful.

ANd what else does the LR3 offer?

90 cubit feet of cargo? check
mp3 capable 6 disc CD? check
bluetooth? check
air suspension? check
300 Hp jaguar engine? check
better off-road capability than ML (even w/ off-road pkg)? check
standard air suspension? check
0-60 as fast as a ML350? check
all this less than a comporable ML350? check
3rd row seats? check
4 year scheduled maintenance? check
3 pointed star on the grill? No, but is it really worth it these days?

Don't get me wrong - I like the new ML, it is not as versatile as it's predecessor. And its new competitors offer more for less.

Yes its heavy, but gosh darn it, it it solid as a vault. I've driven one and it shrugs off pot holes like water on a duck's back. Quiet too.

Some other's that have 3rd row seats, Volvo XC90, Acura MDX, Lexus GS 470. So yes, there is a demand for this feature at least.

The W163 had a depression behind the 2nd row seats that formed the footwell for the 3rd row. In the w164 this is where the 25-gallon fuel tank and such lives. Also, the rear may be a little narrower inside. So, in short, no way! The G-Series will cover that need shortly.

The new saddle tank takes up some of the former footwell space in the center, but on either side of it this space is just empty or wasted with some electronics, see below. The space in the W164 is not used as effectively as in the W163.

PS. Here's an idea for the MB marketing folks:
Just eliminate the rear footwells in the new S-Class. If someone complains: "We've got these nice Maybach cars for ya!" [^] [:D][:)]

W164 grafik

I uploaded a Mercedes-Benz see through grafik so folks can see the new saddle tank, apparently with two fuel pumps, one on each side. The file is rather large 3543x2598 pixels and 3.2 MB. Have fun! [:)]

Wolfgang: This is quite a graphic. The best see through pic for the W164, by far. Thanks.
