There's a 1980 380SL for sale near me which I'm thinking of looking at. Addmitedly I was looking for a 300SL due to fuel consumpsion but this has had a profesional LPG conversion, 85000 miles, history and is advertised as mint (are'nt they all).

Apart from Insurance problems what are the pros and cons of LPG? Does it shorten the life of the engine or have any other ill effects.

My understanding of LPG is that as it burns much more cleanly than gasoline the engine is better off not worse. Less combustion products end up in the lubricating oil so that lasts longer.
The downside is that it contains less calorific energy so you need to burn more to get the same power out of the engine.
As far as the term 'mint' is concerned, with regard to its use by the sellers of elderly cars; I think sometimes it should more properly be 'humbug'.
