My 1985 380 sl is burning more and more oil, blue smoke under acceleration and start up. I have covered about 240000 km ,has anyone tried to just replace the valve oil seals at this milage ? or does it just cure the problem for a short while due to valve guide wear ?
Any info would be great ![:D]

Re: Oil burning

It all depends on how the engine has accrued it's miles and how well maintained it has been.

If it has spent it's life on motorways (Freeways), and been well serviced, it could just need seals. If it's missed services and spent it's life around town, the guides will probably be worn.

If you are getting a garage to do the work, they will be able to check the play in the guides when they remove the old seals. They should then advise you prior to continuing.
