Considering a 91 4matic. Has 190k+ miles, but tons of work done to it. I've heard some horror stories about the early 4matic system...Need the traction for Seattle winters and snow skiing...the car is on Seattle Craigslist for $6k, which is about double Edmunds book...seems a bit steep to me. Thoughts, recommendations?

Well with those miles the transfer case has been replaced at least once. Probably twice (or you'll be the lucky one to pay for the second time).

It sounds like you genuinely need 4Matic capabilities so the car wouldbe a good fit.

As for the price, condition is everything. I wouldn't hesitate to pay $6k for a very clean car that's in great mechanical condition. What kind of work has been done to it and does the seller have receipts. With those miles the head should have been rebuilt (guides, seals, possibly cam and followers).

The 4Matic system is the Achilles heel of that car. Self-leveling suspension is also expensive to fix when it leaks. The hydraulic cylinders cost $500 each so make sure they're not leaking.

My 88 260E just turned 190k and I figure there's at least another 100k in it. Maintenance is everything.

Thanks for the replies....perhaps I need to not be so...er...thrifty. haha! The car has had 4matic transfer case and hydraulic repairs, front axles resealed, rebuilt transmission, engine rear main seal, cylinder head rebuilt as well as other repairs...seller purchased it from a Benz tech, so unsure of receipts...
