Hi all,

I bought a 300 SEL today and only received one key with it.

This key operates the drivers door lock, ignition switch and glove box.

It can not be used in the passenger door lock or trunk/boot.

The key can not be pushed all the way into the trunk lock or passenger door lock.

Does this show that these locks may need cleaning or that the key is incorrect for those 2 locks ?

How would it have been originally ? would all the locks on the car, have used one key ?

How can I get this back to the way it should be ?

Can I buy a complete set of locks for the whole car, which work with one key ?

My first thought was valet key (research this) but I don't think that it opens the glove box (unless your glove box lock is actually inop.)

In answer to your question, yes the master key should open everything.

Try oiling the locks to see whether that gets them working. That the key will not go in implies to me that this is the most likely cause. A replacement key matching the original locks can be ordered from the dealer. New cylinders can be also but you may need to order a complete assembly. For example I have a worn door cylinder. I was told by one dealer that I have to order the entire handle assembly.

If it is a matter of the cylinders being changed in the past an experienced locksmith can rekey them to match as long as s/he has the correct pins available.

Worse case you may be able to remove all of the cylinders (remember the ignition!) from a junked car and try and get a matching key made. Better yet find one being parted out and get everything with the keys.

Order a new master key from the dealer, bring proof of ownership and ID. Its about $25, if that key doesn't work any of the locks it means they have been changed at some point. I think it would be best to have them re-keyed to match the others that work and only have to mess with two of them.
