It's really odd. I accelerated onto the highway to about 70 (speedometer still working), then got off, and when I looked down to check my speed after accelerating onto the frontage road, it was dead to the world. Pulling off onto a residential street nearby and futzing with the fuses produced no change. I stopped it in my driveway at home and pulled the cluster out, and as it turned out, the wire that controls the speedo had fallen off (odd, since the plug still has the little latch on it and is quite difficult to pull out by hand). Thinking it couldn't be that easy, I took it on a little skip to test it out: no change. Tried another cluster with a known good speedometer head: no change.
I looked around the internet to see if there was a fuse that controls the speedometer, but I can't find anything that indicates it has one.
Any other thoughts on this?
