When starting my 1993 300SE from cold the engine starts and revs itself to past 2,500 revs before settling down. This seems to be very bad for the engine as the oil pressure hasn't built-up yet.
Is this normal or do I need to look at this?

2500rpm seems excessive. Mine never idols above 800-900 rpm on cold frosty morning startups. I would get it checked out.
