How's it going everyone? I got a 1992 300sd with a problem, it doesn't happen all the time but started happening more frequently. When I am at idle the engine rpm's go down lower than 500 rpms the battery gauge light flashes and the car shuts off. Doesn't seem like a bad battery could cause this can it? I know I need to change my fuel filters, could dirty filters be a cause? Any info. or ideas are appreciated thanks.

It happened to me few days ago, i was replacing water pump and pulled vacuum hose from the ETA and never noticed,so after putting all things together ,engine went crazy,i had to use two feet at the stop light one on the brake ,another on the gas pedal to keep RPM at 1000 .
I went to autozone and had them read the code P0441-purge flow system-
(thanks to ALLDATADIY) , I printed diagram and followed all the lines ,and there it was , in the back of the ETA.:)
BUT i have M104 and yours is diesel.
Have you done any work to the engine ,where you did  something and didn't notice?

Have you had the alternater checked? Auto zone or Checkers can check the charging system for free.

Hi Symbolic95 I didn't do any recent work to the engine. I replaced the battery because it was leaking acid but still same problem. I even changed the fuel filters. Now it idles bad but doesn't shut off. Battery light still flashing. Accelerates and drives fine had it up to high speeds tonight just fine. Ill have autozone check out the charging system, not sure if it's mechanical or electrical now im confused. Thanks for your input I appreciate it.

Oh ,doesnt shut off ,get yourself MityVac and start checking for vacuum leak, start checking first vacuum shut of valve at the IP and go from there.
Newer diesels have electronic shut off valve ,I have never seen yours, but if .... then its vacuum.
Good Luck.
