OK, please forgive if this question sounds stupid, but are you sure you have a crush washer under the bolt?

Most newer W123's I've seen use two o-rings of different sizes, one small and one big, with no crush washer.

The older ones, like mine, use one small o-ring and a crush washer.

The part numbers I can find follow:

Crush washer: 007603018101

Big upper o-ring (usually found on newer models): 0009970048

Smaller lower o-ring (found on all models, same part # as o-ring for oil filter lid shaft): 0039975848

The 2 O-rings on the Oil Filter Cap Shaft on My 84 300D are 0159979448; Engine Oil Filter Housing O-Ring; For Tube at Oil Filter Canister Lid; 6x10x2mm

So I am guessing your 1979 300D has a different Oil Filter Housing.

So I got these part #'s from EPC but ran them thru Peach Parts to cross check and it came up as "oil filter housing o-ring". However, when searching the part # you gave me, it comes up as "oil filter housing cover tube o-ring".

So I simply misunderstood/misinterpreted "oil filter housing o-ring" as the o-rings on the shaft/"tube" on the cover. Good catch.

Not sure where else in the oil filter housing assembly this o-ring might be used, but it appears it's also the one of the two rings used on the fuel filter bolt for the non-crush washer version.

Here it is on AutoHaus for $0.25, labeled as the fuel filter o-ring...

Depends on the part number of your fuel filter head, on 02 or 01.

The early model 01 does have a crush washer under the banjo bolt, the 02 head does not, instead it has two rubber "O" rings. The top "O" ring does the same thing as the crush washer.

I used a composite washer for the top crush washer. Yu can also simply update the 01 to an 02.

For the top "O" ring, I use whatever fits from a box of metric "O" rings from the local auto parts store.

Good info. Do you know if there was any transition point where the head switched? Or is it a mixed bag? Just curious.

uw, unknown, but my 82 240 had an 01 fuel head.

85Turbo, not sure if there is an upgrade between aluminum and copper, I prefer the latter.

The attachment is from the epc for North American cars.

I'm starting to wonder if one got spec'd for N/A cars and the other for turbo cars. His '84 N/A has the 01 head (presumably) with the crush washer, while all the '84 turbo cars I've seen have the 02 head with two o-rings. So while we usually presume it's based on date of manufacture, instead for US cars it changed simply because all engines after X date became turbo engines, while in Europe they continued to use the other design on the later N/A cars.

Who knows, just kind of thinking out loud. It doesn't really matter anyway, so long as you know what you own car has.

Not according to the service manual.

It goes on "pretty tight". Drive it a bit and check for leaks. If none, you're good. If there is a leak, tighten more. When I did mine the first time that's how I knew I needed to tighten it more.

This may be an elementary question, but is their a torque spec on that filter bolt?
I think that there is a Torque.

I don't torque mine so I don't know what the Torque is. Mine has the 2 O-rings so there is no Washer that needs crushing to seal it.

While on mine tightening it more will not seal the O-rings better there has to be enough torque to compress the Spin-on Filter O-ring enough to seal it.

It may be that printed on the Filter it has to turn it X amount of turns like some Oil Filters Do.
